a midsummer night's update

well, summer is more or less half over, so i thought i'd give a quick update.

first, if you're still looking for the link to the final menlovian (and the other "greatest hits"), you can find it right here.

also, some of you have requested that i add the "here's to the vultures" entry to the greatest hits. i'm not going to do that because i never thought it was that great an entry, but here it is if you want to take another gander at it.

so today i sent out "personalized" reminders to the six people who still need to send me their donations. i hope to have all the money collected soon, so that we can get it to africare & yai/nipd as soon as possible.

three other things on the topic of BLSforGood:

first, for any of you out there who have been meaning to donate, but for whatever reason haven't yet, there's still time to throw in a few bucks. at this point, as we're over $1500, all of the additonal pledges are going to yai/nipd, so it's still going to a great cause. so far we've got $55 going to yai, and it would be great if we could push that number a little higher.

also, to everyone who's sent me checks in the last ten days or so, i'm going to be depositing all of them in the next day or two, so you should be seeing that reflected in your accounts very soon.

finally, for all of your information, i emailed dean wexler last week to make sure that the administration would be amenable to the idea of these donations being made in the school's name. she was very supportive of our efforts, and asked only that we give the money on behalf of "brooklyn law school students" instead of simply BLS.

thus, we've got the green light from the administration, and as soon as i collect these last checks, i'll get the money out to africare and yai as quickly as i can. let's do this thing!

***

hope summer is going well for all of you. congrats to the law review folks, and good luck everyone in navigating the OCI process in the weeks ahead.

Thanks Menlove, er, Scott. You're still the best and should keep posting. Or start a new blog.

Is anyone able to register? I keep getting crazy computer-speak messages.

just called the registrar. of course web advisor is in some sort of meltdown mode. too many people at once.

she assured me it doesn't matter in what order we put our requests in.

For high-demand classes, do we try and register, or just put ourselves on the waitlist?

So it doesn't matter when this week we register then?

What's the deal with wait lists? If I want 5 classes, do I just register for those 5, or do I register for 7 or so and later drop the ones I don't want/need? Thanks.

I will buy a little dog and call him "Entourage"

thanks, 9:45. it's starting to look like there will be some sort of collaborative 2L blogging effort for next year. i'll keep you posted.

Glad you'll be back, Menlove.

Did anyone else successfully register for something like zero classes?

At 11:52 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

out of six, i was allowed to register for two, one of which is a journal.

so yeah - who the hell knows what classes i'll be allowed to take?

for anyone getting involved in the OCI process, you might get a kick out of this...

35 interview tips

That was a funny link.

Is anyone else annoyed that the career center is still in the dark ages with regard to OCI resume submissions? BLS must be one of the only schools where you can't just upload your documents, indicate your bidding preferences, and hit send...

At 7:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

we don't get bidding preferences because they don't care whether or not we want them. we're 2nd tier.

the same top 20 or so students who are on law review get the majority of the interviews.

true. I applied to Skadden just to give them a chuckle. I figure the closest I am going to get to an interview with them is the .003 seconds it takes them to discard my resume. Like a scowl from a very attractive woman, its better than nothing.

At 1:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

are people at skadden allowed to chuckle?

doesn't that cut into billable time?

1:56 wins the award for the best menlove comment thus far!

I've heard about 2 of the 4,267 classes I put myself on the waitlist for: Appellate Advocacy and Accounting for Lawyers. Ironically, these are classes i'm least interested in getting into from the waitlist. Has anyone heard anything about corporations or evidence?

At 11:02 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

just heard from corporations today, that is the first class i heard back from

At 2:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

did anyone else on the moot court team not get into appellate advocacy?

does anyone know what to do?

Law firms that have already selected students for OCI:

Brown Raysman
Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP

Well, I guess that makes me 0 for 2. Only 38 left...

Does anyone know about how many students are interviewed at BLS for each firm? Is it different for each firm? Also, if anyone could tell me whether firms look highly upon my job waiting tables at Chili's during college. I figure Chili's is in customer service; Skadden is in customer service.

firms could choose to interview no one at all potentially. I doubt that each would interview more than 10 people max.

At 1:49 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i dunno - i got an interview @ pillsbury, and there were a ton of slot open (like 15-20?) for me to choose from. (there were a lot less with debevoise - only like 10 or so)

they're only 20 minutes apiece, so they could potentially interview a lot of people...

a whole crapload of employers just went up (cadwalader, sidley austin, bryan cave, kirkland)
